Paint Lick, KY for their second annual hay-ride, bonfire, and capture
the flag. I must inform you that I lived in Paint Lick, KY from
1st-7th grade...it's my homeland. Last year I entitled my post:
"Urban Kids Invade Paint Lick"...it wasn't so much of an invasion this
time. Our students have become friends with the Paint Lick folks and
we were all so excited to get together again. Anna, one of the girls
from Club Jesus (that's what they call their youth group) was counting
down the days until the hay-ride on Facebook. As soon as we arrived
they welcomed us as their own.
What a blessing it is to bring kids together from such different
backgrounds. One boy from Paint Lick was explaining to one our guys
named Amarr that in the summers he doesn't even use a shower...just a
water hose in the back yard. Amarr responded, "Are you crazy??? You
do what?!?!" Hilarious.
We played capture the flag. There's something about that game and
youth...they absolutely love it...I love it actually. It's very rare
I get to pretend like I'm Navy Seal on a secret operation trying to
recover my country's stolen goods. It was dark...there were trees,
cars to hide behind...the only light was coming from a massive bonfire
that Doug built in the middle of the field. Merlin, a small Congolese
middle school boy, somehow manages to get the flag every game. He's
got some mad capture the flag skills. I'm wanting to play in our
neighborhood park. Though I'm not sure how that would go over...I
think the park closes at dusk...We may disturb some of the folks who
sleep in the park in the park also. May need to find another place =).
I'm learning if I want to hang with these students I need to be in
good shape. That Saturday we played Frisbee for two hours in the
morning...when we arrived we played football in a field with 6 in.
tall grass (not so easy to run)...and then we played capture the flag
for almost two hours. Needless to say...I was tired...it's a good
tired though...I'm blessed to have such a great job.
