After-School Program Starts Today!

I'm sitting here in the youth room waiting for our students to arrive. Today we start the after-school program for the 2010-2011 school year. Unfortunately, we are only able to do it three days a week this year...but it's better than zero days a week.

Our after-school program is probably simpler than some of the others out there. It's really based on relationships. The relationships that the adults develop with the students is what is most important. Their education is certainly a priority, but we find that the relationships really make the biggest difference in their lives. Many of our students will do their homework because they know that someone cares if they do it or not. A couple years ago we started doing Good Grades Banquets twice a year. We reward and honor those students who earn As, Bs, and Cs on their report cards. Since then, the students always bring their report cards to church to show us how their doing.

Kids will try to do better if they know someone will notice...see, the relationship often can spark excellence in school.

So, essentially, we need people who are willing to come and invest a small amount of time each week just to spend time with our students...caring adults...not talented adults. So, let me know if you are interested in volunteering. M-T-W from 3:45-5:30.
